Joseph M. Fernandez
Joseph is founder and CEO Active Motif (www.activemotif.com), a company specializes in novel tools and platform technologies for the better understanding of Epigenetics. Joseph founded the company in 1999 and started selling products in summer 2000. Active Motif was nominated to Inc 500 fastest growing company in 2005.
Previous to the foundation of Active Motif Joseph was one of two co-founders of Invitrogen, Inc., a molecular biology company headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Mr. Fernandez and his colleagues built Invitrogen into the leading supplier worldwide of molecular biology tools for cloning and expression. Mr. Fernandez was involved in virtually all aspects of the company - including licensing, R&D, operations, business development and marketing. Mr. Fernandez left Invitrogen after their Nasdaq IPO in 1999. Invitrogen today is in the top 5 biotech companies in the world.
Prior to joining Invitrogen, Mr. Fernandez worked at Stratagene, where he helped commercialize novel products for the then-infant field of molecular biology.
Joseph received his undergraduate degree from Hiram College in Ohio. He pursued post-graduate work in Bowling Green, Ohio before accepting the position with Stratagene. Joseph is the author of a number of scientific papers and has edited chapters in several molecular biology textbooks.
Joseph is a Governor appointed nominee to the California Economic Panel as well as an elected member of a multitude of board positions including for and non-profit organizations.
Brian Steel
Brian is the President and CEO of VoloMedia, the leading provider of advertising and reporting solutions for portable media.
Before VoloMedia Brian held the position of President, International, Yahoo! Search Marketing. He was with Yahoo! for three years, following its 2003 acquisition of Overture Services (previously GoTo.com), bringing 20 years of management experience to oversee a billion-dollar division with operations in 20 countries comprising nearly 1,000 employees.
Prior to Overture/Yahoo!, Brian was a Managing Director of Idealab, which created GoTo.com, and also President and CEO of Idealab Silicon Valley. Before joining Idealab, Brian served as president, chief operating officer, and director for On Command Corp., the world's largest provider of information and entertainment services to the lodging industry. Previously, Brian held senior executive positions at SBC Communications (VP of Strategic Development) and Shearson Lehman Brothers (SVP of Real Estate Merchant Banking).
Brian currently serves on the board of directors for Pandora Media, and on the advisory board of Care2. Brian holds a B.A. in Economics and conducted graduate work in corporate strategy at Duke University, as well as international marketing and finance at the Pacific Asian Management Institute and negotiation at Harvard University.
